If you are planning on visiting Cambridge as a tourist or as a student- I have compiled a list of fun things to do. Cambridge is full of surprises, no matter what you’re into. Whether you love exploring museums, getting lost in a garden, or hunting for unique finds in thrift shops, there’s something for everyone! So, if you’re looking for some ideas for you or your friends, read on—you might just find your new favourite spot!
1. Visit the museums
There are many fun things to do in Cambridge one of my favourites is the museums. There are several specifically curated museums in Cambridge, perfect for your interests. From The Fitzgerald Museum to the Cambridge Museum of Technology there is a wide range. There are approximately 12 museums in Cambridge so there will always be a new museum to explore when you are looking for something to do for free.
2. Head to the funfair
For a cheap day out, there are many fairs visit Cambridge. Depending on the time of the year there is always something to attend. My favourite is the Christmas fairs and stalls, the streets shut for the day and set up stalls which encourages the vintage feeling of an old street market. There are rides, stalls, and prize competitions, anything that tickles your fancy. It’s a fun thing to consider for a day out in Cambridge.
3. Go thrift shopping
When you search for things to do in Cambridge there are many mentions of the thrifting scene. There are many independent shops amongst the conglomerates that house spectacularly unique things and experiences. From the 80’s vintage aesthetics to furniture, anything you can think of to buy, there is a cooler version in a thrift shop. It’s always a thrill to find hidden gems amongst things, which is why I believe thrifting is a fun thing to do in Cambridge.
4. Rent a bike
There are electric bikes in every major city, but Cambridge would be the best city that has the best scenery to put them to use. Many picturesque public parks and paths are charming enough to view alone or enjoy with a group of friends. It’s a great, different, way to exercise but to also savour the nature that is so abundant in the city.
Several bike shops hire sell new bikes, used bikes, bikes with wicker baskets or long-tail cargo ones, you can also join the prominent biking culture in Cambridge.
5. Go canoeing/punting
One unique characteristic of Cambridge is the rivers. The River Cam is the main river which runs through Cambridge and offers a particular activity called ‘punting’. You can be chaperoned up and down the river by your very own person and be told of the historic significance of old bridges and buildings. You can book your tours for any occasion, and if you’re planning to visit in June, don’t miss out on the fireworks when you book a private tour.
6. Play at an arcade
A childhood favourite- The Arcade. Placed in the centre of the Leisure Park. It is open until late so you can miss all the eager children. There are photo booths and vintage or modern games. They are always adding new games and there are always fun activities to part take in if it’s for a low-key date or a fun mates’ night out. And if you’re hungry after all that playing, head upstairs to take a pick at any food or desert places that tickle your fancy.

7. Head to the Escape Hunt Cambridge
If you are looking for something different- might I suggest doing an escape room? It’s a new experience with different themed rooms even if you go multiple times! From Dracula to Aladdin’s vault, you have limited time to solve all the problems and use the props to get yourself out. I wouldn’t recommend it if I didn’t try it out myself, and I can guarantee this is one of the best fun things to do in Cambridge. Students also get discounted tickets so make sure you bring your ID.

8. Try a tour
Cambridge is a multi-layered city. There are many streets and buildings that are multi-faceted which can be unravelled by a detailed tour by an expert. Being a walkable city there are many different tours you can take. There is also a red bus which would allow you to see the outer area of Cambridge where historically prolific people have lived and studied.
9. Be spooked at the Haunted Bookshop
An interesting commodity is the haunted bookshop on St. Edward’s Passageway. It’s a unique experience because of the long history of the city, perfect for dark academic enthusiasts. It is haunted as the owner claimed to see an old ghost in the basement if you dare to explore down there. There are old and vintage book collections to marvel at as well as books for less than the price of a sandwich.

10. Visit the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens
Another hidden gem would be the Cambridge Botanical Gardens. It’s free and open to the public throughout the year with over 8000+ species of plants from around the world. With a garden café and shop, it’s easy to get lost and enjoy the garden at your leisure or to spend your time doing work enjoying the fragranced, fresh air.
