Joining a gym always seems like a good idea, until you check the price. However, there are a few gyms in Exeter that offer student membership to help you cut down on the cost. If the hills in Exeter aren’t providing you with a good enough workout, check out these gyms.
University Gyms

The University of Exeter offers two gyms: the Russell Seal Fitness Centre on Streatham Campus and St Luke’s Fitness Suite on the medicine campus. These gyms are very convenient, allowing you to fit a quick workout in between classes. Memberships can be flexible with the opportunity to “add-on” extras, such as access to the swimming pool or exercise classes. A standard “one-off” day pass would cost you £10. However, an annual premium membership is quite heavily subsidised, costing you about £182. This upfront payment will provide you with access for the whole academic year.
U7 GYM
Found in Marsh Barton, the U7 GYM offers students a 10% discount. This reduces the price to £35 per month. Your membership covers unlimited fitness classes and strength-training equipment. You should note that this gym is further out than the other options, with it being about an hour walk from Streatham Campus. However, if you have a car, it’s only a 10 minute drive.
OJ Gyms
This gym is located in the city centre, making it super convenient for a quick workout. Upon your free induction, a PT will provide you with a tailored programme that suits your needs and goals. OJ Gyms boasts 24/7 access and changing facilities with hot showers. It’s well-equipped, offering Hammer Strength squat racks and deadlift platforms. If you sign up for the Monthly Direct Debit option, you’ll access 10% off, bringing the price down from £40 to £35.
PureGym
If you’re looking for an even bigger discount, you should check out PureGym. Through your UNiDays, you can get up to 30% off your first six months. Their student fixed term membership discount is based on their core membership offer, therefore giving you access to their gyms and fitness classes. With two PureGym locations in Exeter, you’ll be able to take your pick of where is most convenient to you.
Exeter Leisure Centres
These leisure centres do not provide student discounts. However, they are an affordable and customisable option. Starting at £32 per month, a single membership grants you access to four gyms in Exeter, including those in the Riverside Leisure Centre and St Sidwell’s Point. You can choose your main activity, whether that’s the gym, swimming, racket sports, or group exercise classes. For an additional £7, you can add on an extra activity, allowing you to design a membership that works well for you.
Gyms will always be an expense. However, by choosing the best deals, you can pinch the pennies where possible. Explore everything that your membership offers, including the machinery, classes, and one-on-one help, so you know what discount will be the most effective for you.
