But have no fear, as we have all the answers you seek below! We’ve narrowed down Whatuni’s extensive list of universities with film production courses into the 10 best. Film production degrees are booming in popularity and, much like the industry, are insanely competitive. It can also be difficult to figure out where to start looking, especially with how many courses are available all over the UK. So let’s count down Whatuni’s top 10 universities for film production in 2025 to help!
10) Falmouth University
Course name: Television & Film Production
Starting off the list of best UK universities for film production, this rather small university has 2 campuses, one being located in Falmouth town centre and the other in Penryn. To get onto the television and film production course, which is actually located on the Penryn campus, you will need to accumulate a number of UCAS points with a minimum of 104 and the highest being 120. Despite stating they welcome a range of A level subjects, especially those in relation to this course, there are no details about what their current grade boundaries are. It would therefore probably be best for you to contact the university for this information instead of hoping your grades will be enough.
Some reviews from students say that while the facilities are generally good, its location is a bit of an issue as it’s so far out of the city that there isn’t much of an atmosphere in terms of nightlife. It’s relatively quiet overall. However they do say that the nearby pubs are nice.
9) University of Wolverhampton
Course name: Film Production
Next up on the list comes with some rather mixed reviews from its students. While some reviews claim the timetable department can feel a bit disorganised, there is a feeling of community and friendly lecturers, which is super important and makes studying there enjoyable. Plus, the grade boundaries for entering this university are rather low sitting at CCC, meaning you’ve got a good chance of getting in. Whatuni has also collected data on which A level subjects were popular choices for people on the film production course. This includes media studies, english literature, film studies, english language and literature, and english language.
8) University of Greenwich
Course name: Film and Television Production
This gorgeous institute is only one of many across the London area. Famous for it’s architecture, it has also been a popular filming location over the years for many films and tv shows, including:
- Bridgerton – Filmed at the Old Royal Naval College
- Thor: The Dark World – Filmed at the Old Royal Naval College
- The Dark Knight Rises – Filmed at the Old Royal Naval College
- Skyfall – Filmed at the Old Royal Naval College
Grades for entering into this university must equal a total of 112 UCAS points. Unlike the previous 2 universities, they do state that they not only accept A levels but also T levels, BTECs, access to HE and all other qualifications with UCAS tariff points.
7) Edge Hill University
Course name: Film & Broadcast Production
Surrounded by so much greenery, this university offers the best in terms of being so close to the outdoors. So if you’re someone whose grown up in a very green area, then you just might feel at home here.
The grade boundaries for Edge Hill University are BBC-BBB, however they do say that they will also accept a combination of A level and BTEC awards. Some of the modules that are offered with this course include studio practice, cultural representation and the media, and again the chance to create a personal portfolio. A full extensive list of the modules offered at Edge Hill University can be found on their website.
6) Coventry University
Course name: Film Production
Coventry University’s course is a year longer than many of the others, as 3rd year students can choose between a doing a professional placement or studying abroad. Both of these open so many more opportunities for students studying here, some may even be lucky enough to find future employment for when they complete their studies. The grades for getting onto the film production course here are BBC.
Graduates from here have gone on to work as executive producers in Hollywood films and directed BBC documentaries. One particular graduate of the university, Alexandra Sasha Balan, won an Oscar for her work on The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse. Even though she didn’t study film production at Coventry, this is still quite an achievement.
5) University of Gloucestershire
Course name: Film Production
In 2023, graduates of the film and television production course were among the winners and nominees at the Royal Television Society West of England Student awards. There is an extensive amount of modules over the course of your 3 years studying here, some of which include production design, film employability, pre production, and a creation of a portfolio.

4) University of Portsmouth
Course name: Film Production
For those of you looking to apply for the University of Portsmouth, you should have grades somewhere between BBC-BBB in order to gain entrance. However please be aware that they do specify that if you are looking to apply, you should have either taken a relevant subject or have experience in film/video. If you’re already doing your A levels it might be too late for you to change the subject so you know what you need to do. Dust off that camera and get filming! Little tip, your phone works just fine as far as filming a couple videos just to show off your skill. I made a whole 5-minute film with nothing but my phone’s camera so if I can – so can you.
3) Norwich University of the Arts
Course name: Film and Moving Image Production
Current students all say the same thing about the location – it’s a lovely place to study and what’s more, some even describe feeling safe in the area it is in. This is definitely something students, especially freshers, will want to know.
The grade boundaries are relatively low here sitting at BCC ,which definitely makes this one of the easier places to get into. It’s employment rate is also outstanding with a rating of 100%, it’s not difficult to see why people would want to study here with a mark like that.
2) University of Leicester
Course name: Film Studies
One thing this course offers is the chance to study abroad for a year between the 2nd and 3rd year of your study. This opportunity is given so you have the chance to develop your skills, knowledge and confidence for when you eventually enter the world of work. It could also be a chance for you to explore a culture you perhaps had never thought of or even learn a new language!
As we are nearing the top of the list the grade boundaries for getting into the University of Leicester are also getting higher sitting at a comfortable BBB. There is no information for any grades lower than this being accepted, however you should contact the university if you want a definitive answer.
1) University of East Anglia UEA

Taking the top spot on our list of the best UK universities for film production is the University of East Anglia. Not only that, but it is consistent in regards for being the place for the best overall student experience. I'm Amy, a student of the University of Salford who's studying Film Production, so films are definitely my quiz night category. In my free time I love to tap into my creative side by either drawing or writing my next project. When I'm not writing I enjoy going for a swim or (if I'm home) spending time with my family and dog.
