After a long year at uni, there are few better ways to celebrate than heading somewhere sunny with your friends. Beach party holidays are popular for a reason – you can spend the day beside the sea, get ready together, then head out, without having to worry about lectures the next morning. Perfect.

Of course, not every group is looking for exactly the same trip. Maybe you want big clubs and international DJs, or maybe your ideal night starts with a long dinner, and ends in a busy cocktail bar. Luckily, some of Europe’s best nightlife destinations are also cultural cities, historic ports and food capitals, so you can go out and still make the most of the destination during the day.

So, where should you go? These are eight of the best beach party destinations in Europe, with everything from beach clubs and dancing to live music, late-night food and sunset drinks.

1. San Sebastián, Spain

San Sebastián might be best known for food, but it has far more going on after dark than restaurants alone. Parte Vieja is packed with traditional pintxo bars and lively pubs. Gros has a younger crowd, modern terraces and music venues, while Reyes Católicos is popular for smaller alternative bars.

For live bands, electronic nights and visiting DJs, check the programme at Dabadaba. If you want a bigger club, Bataplán sits beside La Concha. Dancing until the early hours with the beach directly outside? It is difficult to complain.

La Concha is the famous beach, but Zurriola is the better choice for surfing and usually draws a younger crowd. Everything is within walking distance, making San Sebastián remarkably easy to explore.

2. Lisbon and Costa da Caparica, Portugal

Why choose between a city break and a beach holiday when you can have both? Lisbon’s nightlife is spread across several neighbourhoods. Bairro Alto is a maze of small bars, Bica has steep streets and busy terraces, and Cais do Sodré is home to Pink Street and plenty of late-night venues.

For clubbing, Lux Frágil remains one of Lisbon’s defining venues. The former warehouse is known for electronic music, international bookings and its rooftop overlooking the Tagus. Look out for batida nights too: the percussion-heavy Lisbon sound draws on Angolan kuduro and other Afro-diasporic rhythms.

Costa da Caparica, around 30 minutes away, has 15 kilometres of surfing spots, seafood restaurants and beach bars. Irmão, at Praia da Morena, is a popular choice for food, cocktails and music on the sand. One warning: the Atlantic is significantly colder than it looks. Good luck!

3. Split, Croatia

Split fits Roman architecture, clear water and a busy nightlife scene into one walkable city. Diocletian’s Palace forms the Old Town, with restaurants, bars and venues occupying its ancient lanes.

Fabrique Pub is one of the city’s biggest bars, with DJs and plenty of space for groups. Central operates as a full-scale club in the Old Town, while Boiler is another popular option nearby. Check opening times before you go: arriving early does not always mean beating the queue. Sometimes it just means finding a locked door.

Bačvice, Split’s best-known city beach, has more bars and clubs around its promenade. Further east, Central Beach at Žnjan runs summer live music and DJ nights beside the water. Split fines public drinking and disruptive behaviour in its historic centre, so keep drinks inside licensed venues and the 1,700-year-old architecture safely unclimbed.

4. Paros, Greece

If Mykonos is already on your mood board, why not add Paros too? Its whitewashed villages and clear water come with a nightlife scene centred on Naoussa.

The Old Port is busiest after dark. Linardo, with its white exterior and doors opening towards the water, is probably the area’s most photographed bar. Nearby, Agosta offers cocktails, music and late-night dancing. Sommaripa has a harbour view, while the inland alleys hide smaller wine bars and courtyards.

On Naoussa’s Back Beach, Fotis All Day Bar offers drinks by the water. Santa Maria is the stronger choice for water sports and a full beach day. August can be busy and expensive, so look at June or September if you want more space.

5. Palermo and Mondello, Sicily

Palermo is chaotic, beautiful and full of distinct nightlife areas. La Vucciria is the loudest and most famous. The historic market transforms at night, filling with street-food stalls, inexpensive drinks, music and dancing around Piazza Caracciolo. It is unlike any other night out on this list.

Via dei Chiavettieri has affordable cocktail bars, live music and crowds gathering outside. Piazza Sant’Anna is surrounded by bars and popular with students and younger locals. On Via dei Candelai, I Candelai hosts concerts, DJ sets, club nights and exhibitions inside a former candle-making workshop.

Mondello sits outside central Palermo, with pale sand, turquoise water and seasonal seafront bars. Nearby Addaura has rocky coves and seaside lounges, while the city centre offers more choice late at night. Wherever you stay, make time for an arancini on the way home. It is practically essential.

6. Palma, Mallorca

Magaluf might be Mallorca’s most famous nightlife destination, but it is far from the island’s only option. Palma has several nightlife districts within the city.

Santa Catalina is known for independent restaurants, cocktail bars and busy terraces around its food market. La Lonja offers smaller venues among the Old Town streets. The scale changes along Passeig Marítim, Palma’s waterfront club district. Social Club is one of its best-known names, with a marina terrace and regular DJs.

Cala Major is the closest sandy beach to the centre, while Ciutat Jardí has a more relaxed restaurant-lined promenade. Mallorca has tightened rules around street and beach drinking in certain resort zones, so check the local guidance. Clubs and licensed beach venues are still very much open for business.

7. Budva, Montenegro

Budva offers three different versions of a night out. Inside the walled Old Town, Casper Bar has an open-air courtyard, cocktails and regular music. Around Slovenska Beach, the waterfront is lined with bars, restaurants and clubs.

For the biggest night, look uphill. Top Hill is Budva’s major open-air club, with several bars and a summer programme spanning electronic music and live Balkan acts. Plan transport in advance, as it sits above town. Omnia is the main indoor alternative near the waterfront.

Mogren is the most scenic beach near the Old Town, while Slovenska has more facilities. Budva is busiest in July and August, when seasonal clubs run their full programmes. If you want maximum atmosphere, the crowds are part of the point.

8. Biarritz, France

Biarritz has a relaxed reputation, but its nightlife still includes proper clubs. Les Halles is the social centre, surrounded by restaurants, busy bars and terraces. Port-Vieux is particularly lively in summer.

Le Duplex, five minutes from the Grande Plage, opens year-round with two floors of music. Carré Coast pairs resident DJs with one of Biarritz’s best club views. Blue Cargo sits on Ilbarritz Beach in nearby Bidart, combining a restaurant, tapas bar and oceanfront dance floor. Check its seasonal opening dates before visiting.

The Grande Plage is easiest for anyone staying centrally, while the Côte des Basques is famous for surfing and sunset views. The clubbers can stay out, the food people can make a night of Les Halles and everybody gets an excellent beach the next morning.

So, there you have it, eight of the best beach party destinations in Europe. Whether your perfect night involves an enormous open-air club, a DJ set on the sand, live music or a few too many stops on a pintxo crawl, there is something on this list for you. Go out, have fun and look after your friends. You can always save the sightseeing for after a very long lie-in.
