Shaun Wright-Phillips has worn a lot of hats: Manchester City academy hero, £21 million Chelsea signing, Premier League and FA Cup winner, England international and, most recently, sequin-clad contestant on Strictly Come Dancing 2026. With the former winger back on Saturday-night TV, plenty of viewers are asking the same question: what is Shaun Wright-Phillips’ net worth, and how did he make his money?
What is Shaun Wright-Phillips’ net worth?

Unifresher estimates Shaun Wright-Phillips’ net worth at around £3 million in 2026, within a likely range of £2 million to £4 million.
Here’s how we got there. Wright-Phillips’ wages were reported to be around £60,000 a week at the height of his career, and he spent roughly a dozen seasons at or near the top of English football with Manchester City, Chelsea and QPR. Assuming he averaged between £30,000 and £50,000 a week across those years, he would have earned somewhere in the region of £19 million to £31 million before tax, or roughly £10 million to £17 million after tax.
That’s a lot of money, but a big chunk of it is unlikely to still be in the bank. Agent fees, a top-flight footballer’s lifestyle, failed business ventures and his later, much smaller MLS and USL contracts all eat into the total. In June 2025, HMRC also lodged a bankruptcy petition against him at the High Court (more on that below), which suggests his finances are more complicated than his career earnings would imply.
Today, his income comes mainly from punditry and TV work, including his 2026 Strictly Come Dancing fee. Weighing all of that up, we think a net worth of around £3 million is a fair estimate, though as with any private individual, the true figure is only known to him and his accountant.
Who is Shaun Wright-Phillips?
Shaun Cameron Wright-Phillips was born on 25 October 1981 in Greenwich, south-east London, and grew up in Brockley. He is the adopted son of Arsenal and England legend Ian Wright, who adopted Shaun when he was three.
Football runs right through the family. His younger brother, Bradley Wright-Phillips, became the all-time top scorer for MLS side New York Red Bulls, and Shaun’s son, D’Margio Wright-Phillips, is a professional footballer who has represented England at youth level.
Shaun Wright-Phillips’ football career
Rejected by Nottingham Forest
Shaun’s career almost stalled before it started. He came through the youth set-up at Nottingham Forest but was released at 17. Manchester City took a chance on him, and it paid off spectacularly.
Breakthrough at Manchester City
At City, Wright-Phillips became a fan favourite for his pace and dribbling. He helped the club win the First Division title in 2001–02, was named the club’s Young Player of the Year four seasons in a row, won City’s Player of the Year award for 2003–04 and made the PFA Premier League Team of the Year in 2004–05.
The £21 million move to Chelsea
In July 2005, Chelsea paid Manchester City £21 million for Wright-Phillips, at the time one of the biggest fees ever paid for an English player. Chances were harder to come by in José Mourinho’s star-studded squad, but he still collected a Premier League title (2005–06), an FA Cup (2006–07) and the Community Shield during his three years at Stamford Bridge.
Back to City, then QPR and the USA
In August 2008, he returned to Manchester City for a fee believed to be around £8.5 million, and he won the FA Cup again with City in 2011. He then joined Queens Park Rangers on deadline day in August 2011 and spent four seasons in west London.
In 2015, he moved to the US to play alongside his brother at New York Red Bulls, before a final spell with Phoenix Rising FC in 2017. He announced his retirement in August 2019, aged 37.
Shaun Wright-Phillips’ England career
Wright-Phillips won 36 caps for England between 2004 and 2010, scoring six goals. His first came on his senior debut in a 3–0 win over Ukraine in August 2004. He was also part of Fabio Capello’s 23-man squad at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, coming off the bench in the group games against the USA and Algeria.

Life after football
Since hanging up his boots, Shaun has worked as a pundit and commentator for broadcasters including BBC Sport, ITV Sport, talkSPORT and Sky Sports.
He has also tried his hand at business, with mixed results. According to reports citing Companies House records, he has been a director of several companies, most of which are now dissolved. These include Maison d’IF, a Mayfair luxury handbag retailer he set up in 2020, which collapsed with net liabilities of more than £200,000. He is listed as a director of SWP29, a PR and communications company incorporated in 2023.
The HMRC bankruptcy petition
In June 2025, The Telegraph reported that HMRC had lodged a bankruptcy petition against Wright-Phillips at the High Court over unpaid debts. The amount was not disclosed. A source close to Shaun told the Daily Mail that he was not aware of the petition, that the matter was with his accountant, and that it would be contested.
We haven’t found any public report of the outcome. A bankruptcy petition is not the same as being declared bankrupt, and petitions are often settled or dismissed before a final hearing.
Shaun Wright-Phillips on Strictly Come Dancing 2026
Wright-Phillips is one of 15 celebrities in the 2026 series of Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Alexis Warr. It hasn’t always been plain sailing: in week three he finished bottom of the leaderboard with 15 points for his quickstep and had to survive the dance-off, with the judges choosing to save him over Melanie Walters.
He bounced back in Icons Week with a Couple’s Choice routine to a James Brown medley that earned 28 points, although some viewers felt the judges had been generous.
