Top performers

The podium

The three universities where students live and study in the safest environments in the UK.

Safest university cities (avg. score)

The safest universities are not always the most famous ones. Many of the highest-ranking institutions for safety are smaller cities and campus universities where lower population density directly translates to lower crime rates. Safety is a legitimate factor in choosing where to spend three years of your life.

We ranked 124 UK universities using city-level safety index as the primary driver, weighted alongside student satisfaction, sustainability and cost of living. The safety index draws on UK crime statistics and reflects the day-to-day safety of the environment students live in.

How we rank

What goes into the score

Every metric is normalised to 0-100 before weighting. No data is hidden.

70%
Safety Index
City-level crime and safety data reflecting the day-to-day safety of the environment students live and study in. This is the primary driver because nothing else in this ranking matters if students do not feel safe where they are.
15%
Student Satisfaction
From the National Student Survey. Satisfaction and perceived safety are closely linked — students in cities where they feel unsafe consistently report lower overall satisfaction with their university experience.
10%
Sustainability Score
Universities that invest in sustainability tend to invest more broadly in campus infrastructure and community — both of which contribute to a safer, better-maintained environment for students.
5%
Cost of Living
Inverted: cheaper cities score higher. Financial pressure increases risk exposure. Students in more affordable cities have more resources to make safer choices about housing, transport and social environments.
