If you’re a student at the University of Hertfordshire, your go-to study spot is probably the LRC or even your bed (no judgement here, same). Personally, if I’m not in the LRC, I’m most likely at home because it’s quiet, relaxing and simply familiar.
But for some of you, you might want a change of scenery. Whether it’s a casual catch-up, a solo date or a “let me feel productive outside” kind of day.
In Hatfield, there’s a good mix of cafés near the University of Hertfordshire, both on and off campus, that suit different moods. So, here are some of my best coffee shops recommendations, in Hatfield, for students:
Caffè Nerro at The Galleria
Located in the Galleria shopping centre, Caffè Nerro is one of those coffee shops that’s always busy. The atmosphere is quite lively with chatter but also conducive enough to sit back and relax. Although, it’s worth mentioning that it’s more suitable for a catch-up or a chill break between errands, rather than long study sessions due to its busyness. Personally, I go for the drinks, particularly their iced flavoured matchas. They also have quite a good range of pastries and cakes too.
Because of its central location, you’ll see a mix of students, professionals and shoppers, making it a dynamic coffee shop. It also offers free Wi-Fi but no dedicated restrooms (you’ll need to use the Galleria facilities). While there isn’t a standard student discount, you can usually get money off via apps like Tastecard or even Caffè Nerro’s loyalty scheme, where collecting stamps leads to a free drink!
Costa Coffee at The Galleria
Costa, also located in the Galleria, has a slightly different vibe. It’s more like your typical, traditional café, with a laidback and familiar feel. I don’t visit here as often (mainly because it can be a bit pricey), but you’ll notice a different crowd of families and older customers, alongside university students.
It’s busy quite often, especially since it’s one of the first coffee shops you see when entering the shopping centre. Free Wi-Fi is also available, but there are no in-store restrooms. Also, Costa doesn’t offer specific student discounts but their rewards app lets you collect points towards free drinks.
Highview Café
Highview Café is easily one of my favourites, mainly because of how convenient it is. If you live near College Lane accommodation, it’s literally about a 5-minute walk, making it perfect for quick coffee runs or relaxed catchups with friends.

I usually go after classes, especially in the mornings or early afternoons — and more often on weekends with my partner. It’s more of a “sit down and chill for a while” type of place, with minimalist interior design and modern books to read. As for its perks, it offers students a 20% discount on food and drinks, along with its own restroom and indoor & outdoor seating. This makes it one of the best value cafés for students who want to stay longer without spending too much. Plus, the staff are truly one of the friendliest people with the utmost service, which makes every experience there a delight.

The Forum Café (College Lane Campus)

The Forum Café is situated right on campus, which is both a pro and a con. It’s a busy area, especially during weekdays between 11am and 3pm, since it’s surrounded by the campus shop, restaurant and even Subway. Students use this space for everything: studying, socialising, meetings, you name it.

Personally, I come here a quick lunch or to meet up with people rather than to properly sit and focus. It can get quite loud and a bit overstimulating at times, but if you like being in a lively environment, it works. There’s free Wi-Fi via campus, with nearby restrooms and you may occasionally benefit from university vouchers (for example through student ambassador roles or events), which can be used towards food and drinks. Although don’t be fooled by it being ‘student budget-friendly,’ as your local Tesco could offer you more for less (just saying x).
Café RoRe (College Lane Campus)

Café RoRe is another convenient campus coffee spot, located in one of the main buildings right next to reception. It’s ideal for when you just need something quick between lectures or meeting up with people.
What stands out to me here is the quality of the hot drinks, I actually prefer them to The Forum Café, especially their white hot chocolate (it’s so, so good!). Plus, it’s right opposite a lounge area with plenty of space to study, relax, or hold group meetings.
The vibe is a mix of both productive and social, which makes it quite versatile depending on what you need that day. There’s access to free Wi-Fi and nearby restrooms, plus occasional university-issued vouchers during events or student roles to make purchases.
Bebo Café
Bebo Café is one of those hidden gems in Hatfield’s town centre. I usually stop by when I’m already in the area, like after getting my nails done or doing some food shopping at Asda. It’s such a cute, aesthetic space, and definitely one of the best spots if you’re into taking photos or just enjoying a chill café experience.

Compared to campus cafés, it’s much calmer and less busy (at least from my experience), which makes it great for studying or just having a peaceful moment to yourself. The menu also has a really good variety of drinks, food, and pastries, plus they’re quite popular for their matchas and cakes. Perks for students is that it offers free Wi-Fi, its own restroom and a quieter atmosphere. While there’s no confirmed student discount, it’s a great option if you’re already in town and want a peaceful study session or solo coffee break.

So, there you have it! Whether you’re looking for a busy café to socialise, a cosy spot to unwind or somewhere in between lectures, Hatfield has more options than you might think. Each coffee shop brings a different vibe — from the lively atmosphere of the Galleria to the more relaxed feel of town centre spots like Bebo. It really just depends on what kind of mood you’re in.
And honestly, even if home is still your favourite study spot (like me), it’s always nice to switch things up every now and then 🙂
