The podium

The three universities where students can study for significantly less than the UK average, without sacrificing quality.

Most affordable university cities (avg. score)

The most affordable universities are not always the ones you expect. Cost of living varies enormously across the UK and is one of the most significant financial decisions a student makes. With maintenance loans falling short of actual living costs at many universities, affordability is not just a preference — it is a practical constraint.

We ranked 124 UK universities using cost of living index as the primary driver — inverted so that cheaper cities score higher — weighted alongside student satisfaction, graduate earnings and safety. The cost of living index reflects the day-to-day cost of being a student in each city.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

The questions students and parents actually search for about university affordability and cost of living, answered honestly.

How we rank

What goes into the score

Every metric is normalised to 0-100 before weighting. No data is hidden.

60%
Cost of Living Index
Inverted — cheaper cities score higher. Covers accommodation, transport, food and day-to-day essentials. The single biggest financial variable in the student experience outside of tuition fees.
20%
Student Satisfaction
From the National Student Survey. A university can be cheap and miserable. Satisfaction ensures this ranking rewards genuine value — affordability that comes alongside a decent student experience.
15%
Graduate Earnings
HESA data. Affordability during study is only half the equation. A cheaper university that also produces well-paid graduates delivers better overall value than one that is cheap but leads nowhere.
5%
Safety Index
City-level crime data. Affordable cities that are also unsafe create a different kind of cost — personal security measures, safer transport choices, and the ongoing stress of feeling unsafe all add up.
