Finding the perfect place to live in your university city is so important. It can be a scary decision to think about, especially when you are not familiar with the area. Some things to consider when looking for your perfect student neighbourhood include, how close it is to uni, travel links to the local shops and student hot spots as well as what the area is like. Huddersfield has a few neighbourhoods that are known for being popular with student accommodation.
If you are wanting to look at what is available for students in Huddersfield I recommend looking on the university website because they have more information on certified accommodation. They also have a team on the main campus dedicated to supporting students with finding the perfect student accommodation for them, called HudLets. Aspley is a student neighbourhood hot spot, with Greenhead and Lockwood being not far behind, so let’s take a look at some of the top student neighbourhoods in Huddersfield.
Aspley
Aspley is front and centre of student life in Huddersfield, if you are wanting somewhere you can roll out of bed and arrive at your morning lecture, this is the place to look. It has plenty of accommodation options available and is very popular with students.
It’s close proximity to campus means you will only need to walk 10 minutes down the road to make it to your lecture on the Queensgate campus. If you are based on the health innovation campus, then it will take you around 25 minutes to walk to the campus, which is something to bear in mind. Scattered throughout the neighbourhood are a number of corner shops and takeaway stores and the nearest supermarkets being Lidl and Sainsburys. If you want to be surrounded by the hustle and bustle of student life this is the place to look.

Most students you speak to will probably be based in Aspley due to the high amounts of student accommodation companies such as IQ and Capital having their buildings based here. The high student footprint in this area means that you will always find someone to walk back with after a student night out. There are designated lit up routes through the university main campus you can take back to Aspley, making this one of the safest and easiest places to get back to after a night out.
This would be the ideal place to live for first year students who are wanting to live in an area close to campus and with a very high student presence.
Lockwood
This student neighbourhood is a little bit further out and is perfect for students on a tighter budget but want to live in a student house. There is a train station within Lockwood, which is perfect for those who want easy travel links to exploring some new local places, especially for walks. If you are wanting to travel a bit further afield it may be better to travel from Huddersfield train station which you can get to from Lockwood via a short train trip, bus or taxi.

The nearest supermarket is Morrisons, or you could pop into town after a lecture and get a bus back to Lockwood afterwards. To get to the main university campus you could walk or catch the bus into town so travel will take you longer than those who live in areas such as Aspley.
I wouldn’t recommend Lockwood to someone travelling to the health innovation campus because it would be a long walk, the easiest way to get to the health innovation campus would be to either get the train from Lockwood station to Huddersfield or take the bus. If you know that the health innovation campus is likely to be where most of your lectures are held, I would recommend looking at accommodation options in Aspley or Greenhead.
Greenhead
The moss well known part about Greenhead is its park, Greenhead Park is well known for being a great local place for walks and picnics in the summer. If you are lucky enough to live near Greenhead park you may see some lovely sunset views during your local walk. I love walking around the park and going to the lake where you can see all the ducks, is a nice way to spend your weekend.
While it may be a nice area to live, it is further away from the university, with it being just the other side of town. However, if you are based at the health innovation centre, Daphne Steele or Emily Siddon, then you may be closer to campus than your fellow coursemates staying in Aspley, and your walk will be more scenic!
It is important to bear in mind that a lot of students do live in Aspley so if you are wanting to go for a night out with friends it may be a bit of a walk in the opposite direction. I recommend that if you live in this area, you would be better off getting a taxi back. You could meet friends in town very easily during the day, but at night it would probably be safer to get a taxi as the walking routes will be less busy and not as lit up compared to other areas of town.

There are a number of great student neighbourhoods waiting for you in Huddersfield. Whether you want lively student neighbourhoods, park views or easy travel links to some amazing walk destinations, Huddersfield has it. It’s all waiting for you. Even better, the university is very supportive in helping students find the right place to live. They are great at helping you find approved student friendly accommodation, helping to make that decision a little more easier. So come to Huddersfield and explore your future home away from home in one of these top 3 student neighbourhoods.
