Nawaaz Indian Restaurant

Where: 159 London Road

What: First and foremost Nawaaz serves great Indian dishes. It’s a favourite in Leicester for that very reason. But what’s even better… it’s BYOB! A set meal for two people (which comes with loads of food) is only £25 making it good on the belly and the pocket. The family that runs the restaurant has been in the catering business for more than 50 years, so you know you’re in good hands.

Spice Bazzar

Where: 326 Welford Road

What: Another one of Leicester’s favourite curry restaurants. Spice Bazzar prides itself on sourcing local ingredients and its cleanliness. The extensive menu covers everything you could want with house specialities including a garlic tikka bhuna (£6.90) and chili chicken masala (£6.90).

Marrakech Restaurant

Where: 7 Highfield Street

What: Bringing the best of Morocco to Leicester is Marrakech. Authentic food from the north African country is cooked with pride by native chefs. The menu is pretty much what you would expect — and that’s a great thing. Add in an exotic decor and you might as well be in the country itself.

Where: 73 Narborough Road

What: Is there anything that makes the mouth water more than the words ‘charcoal grill’? Istanbul Restaurant nails the cuisine serving lamb shish (£10.90) and chicken shish (£9.90). If you’re going with some mates you could even try the Istanbul Jumbo Platter (£52.50) which comes with cacik, saksuka, humus, kisir, sarma, four lamb chops, eight lamb shish, eight chicken shish, six lamb ribs, six chicken wings, two adana kofte, two chicken kofte, chicken doner, lab doner, rice and salad. And breathe.

Where: 1 Andrewes Street

What: If you’re feeling particularly hungry, there’s only one place to go. Chef and Spice (winner of Leicester Mercury’s Restaurant Of The Year in 2015) serves more than 40 dishes at its buffet. From Sunday to Thursday it’s only £13.95 per person — not bad for a student budget. Plus Leicester City favourite Riyad Mahrez (above) has been so it’s got to be good.

EFES Mangal BBQ

Where: 32-36 Braunstone Road

What: The clue to what this family-run Turkish restaurant serves is in the name. EFES (so the about section of their website tells us) is a large archaeological site in Aegean Turkey, which is where the Virgin Mary apparently spent her last days. Mangal means charcoal grill. So there you have it, a Turkish charcoal grill. Prices are reasonable with a chicken shish costing £10.95.

Kobe Sizzlers

Where: 64-66 London Road

What: It’s impossible to look at that burger and not feel hungry. if you’re feeling the need to satisfy your meat cravings but want something a bit classier than a McDonald’s, Kobe Sizzlers is the one for you. Their delicious (and frankly stunning) dishes make for an exceptional dining experience.

Fernandez Grillhouse

Where: 10 Friar Lane

What: Think Fernandez Grillhouse, think chicken, steak and burgers. The fun interior makes this restaurant a great place to relax with friends. Plus on weekdays they do a 1/2 a chicken, burger, pitta or wrap for £6 if you come before 6pm. Bargain.

Shimla Pinks

Where: 65-69 London Road

What: Shimla Pinks’ goal is a pretty simple one: To bring the hustle and bustle of Delhi to Leicester. Taking the crown of Leicester Mercury’s Restaurant Of The Year in 2016, this Indian curry house uses fresh herbs and spices to create engaging and delightful dishes.

Chettinad Restaurant

What: Hailing from a small village in the Southern Tamil Nadu State of India, Chettinad Restaurant cooks up home comfort food. They’re proud to serve no fuss or frills food, which is perfect when you just want a decent meal without eating from a boot/jam jar or whatever hipster idea comes up next.

Everest Dine

What: If you’re looking for somewhere to take a date in Leicester, then Everest Dine is not a bad option. It combines traditional Nepalese and Indian dishes with a modern style, set in a warm atmosphere. Try out the house special karahi (£10.95) or the chicken Nepal (£8.95) both specialities of the chef.

Heritage India

What: Last but certainly not least is Heritage India. Their inexpensive but well-made Indian curries set them apart from their competitors. Pick up a butter chicken for just £7.25 or chicken jalfrezi for only £7.45. Plus they’ve made it into our student deals in Leicester article, by offering 15% off collection and dine-in. Bargain.
