Southampton is one of the best cities for outdoor activities. It has the benefit of being surrounded by green space and of being by the coast, enabling a variety of activities, from walking to sailing. If the turn of the year has motivated you to get back outdoors, read on to find out how you can both have fun and improve your skills.
A simple walk
If you’re a student without a car and on a budget, why not use your legs? For example, Southampton Common is a sprawling open space, with 365 acres of woodland and greenery. It’s quiet, especially in the week, and you can spend hours there without getting bored. If you’ve a bit more time, why not head up to the vast, peaceful forest of Lords Wood? Best of all, walking is one of the few free activities, perfect for students! If walking is your thing, be sure to check out our article on the prettiest walking routes in Southampton.
Alpine Snowsports
Perfect for new and experienced snowsports adventurers, Alpine Snowsports boasts an artificial surface for skiing, snowboarding and donutting. You’ll be led by an instructor to help you get started or hone your existing skills, making it perfect for all ski levels. They’re open 7 days a week, so you can choose any day and nearly any time that works round your studies or job. You can even hire the place for a party. Whether you’re looking for serious, regular lessons or the odd fun day out with your friends, Alpine Snowsports has something for everyone, making it one of the most inclusive outdoor activities in Southampton.
Go Ape
Go Ape operates in nearly 40 different locations around the UK. Go Ape’s outdoor activities in Southampton are situated in Itchen Valley Country Park, set in 440 acres of woodland and meadows by the River Itchen. You could opt for the Treetop Challenge, a high rope course with long zip lines. Or you could head into the forest on a heavy-duty, all terrain segway. Perhaps most thrilling is the Treetop Challenge Xpress, a high wire walk that is sure to get your heart racing. If this tickles your fancy, just be sure to prepare (mentally and physically!) for a day of intense activity. Some activities are not for the faint-hearted!
Woodmill Outdoor Activities Centre
Located right on the River Itchen, this centre offers a bit of everything, including boat hire, kayaking, fishing and climbing. You can choose from a variety of either off ground, land or water-based activities. Once again, this is perfect for a small group or a large party, depending on the occasion. If you’re unsure, the centre runs taster sessions throughout the year for paddling and climbing. You won’t need to purchase any equipment or clothing as you will be provided with everything you need by fully qualified instructors, allowing for you to have fun and learn new skills in the process.
University of Southampton Sailing Club
If you’re a student at the University of Southampton, why not join the university’s very own sailing club? It is the largest university sailing club in the country, offering sailing to any student, whether you’re a beginner needing lessons or experienced on the water. The sailing club is also one of the few sports clubs to offer multiple sports as they also have a casual running club.
