Not drinking doesn’t mean missing out, even at uni, where a big part of student life revolves around alcohol. I’ve been sober throughout my time at Sheffield and have still managed to have some awesome nights out. Being sober doesn’t mean you have to be tucked up in bed by 8 p.m. Nights out can still be social, fun, and memorable. So whether you’re taking a break from drinking or just don’t fancy it, here are 8 sober nights out in Sheffield that are actually worth doing.
1. Golf Fang
Like stepping into a quirky art gallery, Golf Fang has 18 wildly themed golf holes filled with vibrant street art, pop culture references, and immersive designs. With an extensive food and drinks menu, they offer a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks, perfect for those who want to enjoy the night without alcohol. Because you’re active and having fun, it takes the pressure off feeling awkward about not drinking, something that can be tricky in pubs or clubs.
2. Cinema
For a chilled but proper night out, the cinema is a great choice. They stay open late, meaning you can catch a film after dark, still getting that night-out feel, but in a more low-key environment. It’s an easy option for if you want to hang out solo, or with friends. Odeon and Cineworld both offer student memberships with discounts, making it easier to see new releases without splashing out. Plus, there are plenty of cinemas right in the city centre, with others just a short tram ride away.
3. Clubbing
Clubbing can be just as fun without the drinks. You can dance with your friends, listen to the music, and have fun on your own terms. Most clubs serve soft drinks, so you won’t feel left out while everyone else is drinking. Plus, staying sober means you can remember every moment, and avoid the usual hangover.
4. The Treehouse Board Game Café
Located just outside the city centre, the Treehouse Board Game Café offers over 800 different board games to play. They’re open until 11 p.m, so it’s a great evening option that’s different from the usual club scene. If you’re into more relaxed, social nights that are more on the peaceful side (unless you’re super competitive, of course), this place is perfect to just chat, play, and chill.
5. Gameshow All-Stars
If you’re after an energetic, interactive, sober-friendly night, Gameshow All-stars has you covered. It’s lively with its variety of game shows and quizzes, and it is great for socialising without alcohol. With plenty of soft drinks available, it’s a refreshing alternative to traditional clubs.
6. Lane 7
Lane 7, found in the city centre of Sheffield, has something for everyone. With bowling, karaoke, darts, and more, it is the perfect night out for friend groups who are done with the repetitiveness of the same clubs. There’s plenty to do, keeping you busy all night, so there’s no pressure to drink or feel awkward.
7. Music gigs
Sheffield has a buzzing music scene, with venues like Corporation and Record Junkee hosting things such as tribute acts, indie bands, and DJs. Live music is such a fun way to spend an evening, and is a good way to be a part of a crowd without feeling the pressure to drink. Whether you like rock, pop, or something more niche, there’s something for everyone.
8. Wetherspoons
Sometimes all you need is a cheap bite, a semi-comfy booth, and a good chat with your friends. Wetherspoons delivers exactly that. It might not be the most glamorous choice, but they have plenty of non-alcoholic drink options – from mocktails, to soft drinks, and non-alcoholic beers. It’s an easy, affordable night. And when it comes to Wetherspoons, Sheffield definitely isn’t short on options, there are plenty to choose from.
So, if you’re cutting back, or drinking just isn’t your thing, don’t stress, there are plenty of sober nights out in Sheffield. It can be daunting being sober at university when so much seems to revolve around alcohol, but Sheffield has so much to offer beyond clubs and bars – you’re not going to miss out, there are plenty of things to do. All you really need is good company and something fun.
