Sheffield is more typically know for its craft beer, having more breweries per head than anywhere else in the UK. So it doesn’t always get the credit it deserves for its wine scene. From initmate wine nights, to lively tasting events, I’ve rounded up some of the best wine tasting spots in the city.

1. Gills & Co.

525 Ecclesall Rd, Sharrow, Sheffield S11 8PR

Gills & Co. is highly rated among the wine tasting options in Sheffield. They offer a wide variety of classical and new world wines from all across the globe. The menu is carefully crafted to pair perfectly with the wines, elevating the flavours. Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons are when they host their wine tastings – a range of events such as wine and cheese nights, flavours of different cities, and more!

2. Tenaya Wine

239-241 Crookes, Sheffield S10 1TF

Praised for its knowledgeable staff and extensive selection, Tenaya Wine is another five-star wine shop bar in Sheffield. A unique aspect of this bar is their focus on female producers and sustainability, so if that is important to you, this place is definitely worth checking out! They host a variety of tasting events and summer fairs, as well as a wine club to try exclusive wines that haven’t reached the shop floor yet. Overall, Tenaya Wine seems like the perfect place if you’re looking for a little community in your wine tasting.

StarmoreBoss specialises in quality wine, and is behind a lot of wine tasting events in the city at an affordable price, with tastings around £15. It’s a wonderful hidden gem in Sharrow Vale.

4. Barks Wine Shop

Unit G8, 20 22 Cambridge St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 4HJ

Located in Leah’s Yard, a hub for independent shops and bars, Barks Wine Shop has a carefully curated selection of wines. They offer private tastings for special events, like birthdays, and reviews frequently compliment the knowledge and kindness of the owner. It’s definitely worth popping in!

5. Not Open; Don’t come

Orchard St, Sheffield City Centre, Sheffield S1 2FB

If you’re after a unique wine tasting experience, this is absolutely for you. This speakeasy-style wine bar is a real hidden gem – like, literally – the enterance looks like an abandoned fire door. There’s a phone number on the door, call and enter. Once you do enter, however, the vibe is like going into a friends apartment. NO;DC is perfect if you’re new to the wine tasting scene – the owners aim for comfort, with no expectation of expertise, just a nice, fun time!

There’s an extensive range of wine bars in Sheffield, and there’s also a variety of wine-related events! In fact, coming up is Sheffield Wine Week on Wednesday 24th June to Sunday 28th June. During Wine Week, wine bars around Sheffield host a collection of different events. Some of these include: a night of trying premium wines, collaborations with other places like chocolate shops to have a taste paired with wine, and wine fairs, where you can go and just have a taste of everything.

On the 27th during Wine Week, they’re hosting a festival at Bole Hills! There’s live music, food, and an abundance of wine to taste.

Sheffield’s wine scene has a lot more to it than you’d realise! It’s great if you’re looking to do something a bit different, maybe for a date night, with your friends, or even solo.
