What the ranking tells you about studying civil engineering

Civil engineering is one of the most consistently employable engineering disciplines in the UK. With 58 universities offering programmes, the variation in course quality, industry placement access, accreditation depth and graduate outcomes is substantial. This ranking scores all 58 on eight metrics β€” giving you data on teaching quality, academic support and student satisfaction alongside the graduate earnings and cost of living factors that most traditional league tables ignore.

Universities ranked
Β£22.5k

Β£35k

Universities scoring 100% academic support

Bradford at 16th: the teaching quality standout

University of Bradford achieves 98% teaching quality and 96% academic support β€” the highest teaching score in this ranking and among the strongest academic support scores. It ranks 16th overall with 119 points. Its lower rank is driven by lower scores on safety, social life and graduate earnings (Β£28,500 β€” the second-lowest in the field). For students who specifically want a high-quality taught experience in a city with low living costs, Bradford's course delivery metrics are the strongest in the dataset. Its civil engineering department has established industry links with contractors and consultancies in the Yorkshire and West Midlands markets.

University of Exeter: 17th place, lowest course scores in the field

University of Exeter ranks 17th with 118 points. That position appears competitive, but its teaching quality score of 68% is the lowest in the entire ranking, and its academic support score of 60% is the lowest by a significant margin β€” the next-lowest is Glasgow Caledonian at 63%. Exeter benefits from strong student satisfaction (79%, joint-highest in the field), a high safety score and a genuinely good city environment β€” all of which contribute to its overall position. But for students choosing Exeter specifically for civil engineering, the course delivery data is the most relevant information available and it does not support the ranking position. Worth considering carefully before applying.

Aberdeen (11th) and Northampton (41st) both produce Β£35,000 graduates. University of Aberdeen ranks 11th with 124 points, 100% academic support and Β£35,000 graduate earnings β€” the joint-highest in the field. University of Northampton ranks 41st with 71 points and also produces Β£35,000 graduates, despite the lowest overall score in the top 40. Both earn the same starting salary. Aberdeen's result reflects its oil and gas industry connections in the North East of Scotland, where civil and structural engineers enter a premium market. Northampton's result likely reflects a small cohort entering specific high-paying roles. Graduate earnings are a useful signal but need context β€” a cohort size of three students entering Β£35,000 roles produces the same figure as a cohort of 300.

Dundee: the 100% double at 24th

University of Dundee ranks 24th with 108 points, achieving 100% on both academic support and teaching quality β€” the joint-best double in the field. Graduate earnings of Β£30,000 are mid-table. Dundee's civil engineering programme benefits from connections to the construction and infrastructure sector in Scotland, and its small cohort size typically means excellent staff-to-student ratios. Its sustainability score (29.5) is the second-lowest in the ranking, which cost it points. For students who want guaranteed strong course delivery in a low-cost Scottish city, Dundee's data profile is one of the most overlooked in this entire ranking.

ICE accreditation: check before applying

The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) accredits civil engineering programmes in the UK. An ICE-accredited MEng is the standard route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status β€” the professional benchmark for senior civil engineering roles in infrastructure, construction, transport and water. An accredited BEng can qualify you for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status. Most major contractors and consultancies (Arup, AECOM, Mott MacDonald, Jacobs, WSP) recruit preferentially for accredited MEng graduates at senior level. Confirm that the specific programme you are applying to holds current ICE accreditation at the appropriate level β€” BEng and MEng can have different accreditation statuses within the same department.

Civil engineering degrees: your questions answered

Durham University is the best university for civil engineering in the UK according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings, scoring 160 points with Β£32,000 graduate earnings and 94% academic support. University of Plymouth comes second with 152 points and Nottingham Trent University third with 147. University of Bradford (16th) has the highest teaching quality in the field at 98%. University of Aberdeen (11th) produces the joint-highest graduate earnings at Β£35,000 alongside 100% academic support. University of Exeter ranks 17th but has the lowest teaching quality (68%) and academic support (60%) scores in the entire ranking.
Civil engineering graduate salaries range from Β£22,500 (Buckinghamshire New University) to Β£35,000 (Aberdeen, Northampton) within six months of graduating, based on 2027 data. The majority of universities produce graduates earning between Β£29,000 and Β£32,500 β€” a tighter spread than many other engineering disciplines. Starting salaries in infrastructure, transport, water and construction are typically Β£27,000 to Β£34,000. Salaries increase significantly with Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, with experienced chartered civil engineers typically earning Β£45,000 to Β£80,000 or more depending on specialism and location.
An MEng (typically four years) is the standard route to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status through ICE. Most major civil engineering employers recruit at MEng level for their graduate schemes, and CEng is the professional benchmark for senior engineering roles across infrastructure, transport and construction. A BEng (three years) qualifies you for Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status and for many graduate roles, but the pathway to CEng is longer. If you plan to work as a professional civil engineer long-term, an MEng from an ICE-accredited programme is usually the better choice. A BEng is viable if you want flexibility to move into adjacent sectors earlier or if your target employers do not require CEng. Entry requirements for MEng programmes are typically higher than for BEng at the same institution.
Maths is required at A-level for virtually all UK civil engineering programmes. Physics is required or strongly recommended at most universities. Some institutions accept Design Technology or Chemistry in place of Physics. Entry requirements range from BCC (around 120 UCAS points) at less selective institutions to A*AA at Bath, Durham and other leading departments. Further Mathematics significantly strengthens applications at competitive universities. Without Maths A-level, access to civil engineering degree programmes is essentially closed. If you are considering civil engineering and have not taken Maths to A-level, enquire with individual universities about foundation year routes.
Civil engineering graduates work across infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels, airports), structural engineering (buildings, foundations), geotechnical engineering (ground conditions, earthworks), hydraulics and water resources, transport planning, construction management and environmental engineering. Major employers include Arup, AECOM, Mott MacDonald, Jacobs, WSP, Atkins, Balfour Beatty, Network Rail, Highways England and local authorities. The UK has a sustained pipeline of major infrastructure projects β€” HS2, various river and coastal flood defence programmes, road and rail upgrades β€” that create consistent graduate demand. Civil engineering graduates also commonly move into project management, quantity surveying and construction consultancy roles.
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is the professional body for civil engineers in the UK. ICE accreditation means the programme meets the educational requirements for professional registration β€” either as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng, via an accredited BEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng, via an accredited MEng or BEng plus further learning). CEng status is the industry standard for senior civil engineering roles and is required or preferred by most major contractors and consultancies for senior technical and managerial positions. Confirm that the specific programme you are applying to holds current ICE accreditation at the appropriate degree level β€” BEng and MEng within the same department can carry different accreditation statuses. Verify directly on the ICE website before applying.
