What the ranking tells you about studying psychology

Psychology is the most popular undergraduate subject in the UK by application volume. With 108 universities in this ranking, variation in research specialisation, laboratory access, dissertation supervision quality, clinical placement opportunities and graduate employer connections is enormous. BPS accreditation is the most important structural factor for applicants: only BPS-accredited programmes qualify graduates for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), which is the prerequisite for postgraduate training in clinical, counselling, forensic and educational psychology. Check accreditation before applying to any programme.

University of Bath at 18th: £30,000 — the highest psychology earnings from outside the top 10

University of Bath ranks 18th with 184 points and produces psychology graduates earning £30,000 — the highest in this 108-university field. Bath ranks 18th because its cost of living, sustainability and safety city-level metrics suppress the overall position. Its 92% academic support and 90% teaching quality are both above the field average. Bath's psychology graduates access premium roles in research, data analysis and organisational psychology at earnings significantly above the field median, reflecting Bath's employer connections and graduate network. For students specifically targeting the highest-earning psychology pathway, Bath's earnings are the most significant data point in this table.

Glyndwr University at joint 9th: £15,500 — the lowest earnings, 9th position

Glyndwr University, Wrexham ranks joint 9th — in the top 10 — with 197 points, yet produces graduates earning £15,500 — the lowest in this entire ranking by a significant margin. The next-lowest is London Metropolitan at £19,000. Glyndwr's earnings figure reflects the regional salary differential for graduate roles in Wrexham and North Wales combined with the timing of graduate employment data collection. Its 88% on both teaching quality and academic support are comfortably above the field average. Glyndwr's 9th-place position is built on very strong safety, social life and sustainability scores. The earnings figure should not be interpreted as a reflection of programme quality.

University of Wales Trinity Saint David (21st) achieves 100% academic support and 98% teaching quality — the strongest course delivery double in this 108-university field outside institutions achieving 98%+ on both. Abertay University (65th) and Buckinghamshire New University (joint 48th) also achieve 100% academic support. University of West London (joint 16th) achieves 99% teaching quality. Solent University (joint 46th) achieves 98% on both metrics. For students comparing on course delivery quality specifically, these five institutions provide the strongest measured data in this field.

Psychology degrees: your questions answered

Swansea University and Durham University are joint first according to the 2027 Unifresher Rankings with 220 points each. University of Bath (18th) produces the highest graduate earnings at £30,000. University of Wales Trinity Saint David (21st) achieves 100% academic support and 98% teaching quality. Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh (68th) has the lowest academic support at 68%. Glyndwr University (joint 9th) produces the lowest earnings at £15,500, reflecting regional salary data rather than programme quality.
The British Psychological Society (BPS) accredits undergraduate psychology programmes that meet the standards for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC). GBC is the entry requirement for all BPS-accredited postgraduate training routes including clinical psychology (DClinPsy), counselling psychology, forensic psychology, educational psychology and health psychology. Without GBC, you cannot access any of these professionally recognised postgraduate routes. If your goal is to become a practitioner psychologist in any specialism, your undergraduate degree must be BPS-accredited. Confirm BPS accreditation on the BPS website before applying. Some programmes cover the core areas needed for GBC but are not formally accredited — check carefully, as this distinction matters for your postgraduate options.
Psychology graduate salaries range from £15,500 to £30,000 within six months based on 2027 data. Most universities produce graduates earning between £22,000 and £27,000. The wide range reflects regional salary variation and the diverse range of graduate destinations. Qualified clinical psychologists (after DClinPsy) typically start at NHS Band 7 to 8a (£43,000 to £57,000). Counselling psychologists start at similar levels. Graduates in human resources, research, data analysis and occupational psychology access £24,000 to £35,000. The six-month earnings figure significantly undersells the long-term earning potential of psychology for those who continue to professional qualification.
Psychology graduates work as clinical psychologists (with DClinPsy), counselling psychologists, forensic psychologists, educational psychologists, health psychologists, neuropsychologists, occupational psychologists, HR and talent management professionals, research psychologists, mental health nurses (with further training), social workers (with conversion), therapists and counsellors (with further training), user experience researchers, data analysts, teachers and marketers. Major employers include NHS Trusts, HMPPS, local authorities, the armed forces, private healthcare providers, educational institutions, management consultancies, technology companies and research organisations. Psychology's combination of statistics, research methodology and human behaviour understanding transfers broadly across sectors.
No specific A-levels are required for most psychology programmes, though Psychology A-level is widely held and relevant. Biology and Maths are valued for programmes with a strong neuroscience, research methods or statistics component, and Maths is required or preferred at several leading programmes. Entry requirements range from BCC at less selective institutions to A*AA at the most competitive programmes. Psychology's degree-level statistics and research methods content is more demanding than A-level Psychology suggests — a strong Maths background, even without Maths A-level, is genuinely advantageous.
