Broomhill Sheffield Broomhill

Broomhill

The heartland of Sheffield student life — Broomhill is the most popular student neighbourhood in the city, directly adjacent to the University of Sheffield's main campus on Western Bank. Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses packed with TUoS students, cafés, takeaways, and independent shops. Broomhill's compact character — dense, walkable, and completely student-dominated during term — makes it the closest thing Sheffield has to Fallowfield or Lenton. Start looking in November. The Sheffield Students' Union is a 5-minute walk.

Very popular with postgrads, international students, and second/third year TUoS students who want proximity to campus with a more peaceful atmosphere. Slightly higher rents than Broomhill but better housing quality and a calmer, more upmarket feel. Ecclesall Road's excellent independent scene is a short walk south.

Cheaper than Broomhill, with excellent terraced housing, and a strong community of second and third year TUoS students. The walk to campus is hilly but character-building. Crookes Valley Park is a lovely local green space. Popular with students who want community and character over pure campus proximity.

Your questions answered

Everything you need to know about student life in Sheffield.

Living in Sheffield

Sheffield is the most affordable major Russell Group student city in the UK — and consistently one of the cheapest cities in the entire Unifresher set for total monthly costs. Total monthly outgoings typically run £950–£1,050 covering rent, food, transport, and social life. Rent averages just £450–£680/month for a room in a shared Victorian terrace in Broomhill, Crookes, or Walkley — well below London, Edinburgh, Bristol, or even Nottingham and Manchester. Ecclesall Road's independent bar and café scene is exceptional value. The Peak District is 20 minutes away and completely free. A 16–25 Railcard makes Manchester (under 1 hr), Leeds (30 min), and London (under 2 hrs) all accessible without breaking the budget.

Sheffield is a safe and welcoming city for students. The main student areas — Broomhill, Crookes, Endcliffe, Walkley, and Ecclesall Road — are all well-established, well-policed, and residential. Both universities have active welfare and security services. Sheffield's compact, walkable geography makes it unusually navigable — students rarely feel disoriented or isolated in the way that students sometimes can in much larger cities. The 60,000+ combined student community creates a well-connected and supportive social environment. Sheffield consistently ranks highly for student satisfaction and quality of life in national surveys.

Sheffield's nightlife is genuinely excellent and consistently underrated nationally. Rock City-equivalent venues include Corporation (one of the UK's finest independent rock and indie clubs), Leadmill, O2 Academy Sheffield, and The Foundry. West Street is the main student nightlife strip. The Supertram makes getting home safely straightforward. The Students' Union — voted the UK's best more than any other — runs an exceptional programme of live music and club nights. Ecclesall Road's independent bars are outstanding for more relaxed evenings. Kelham Island's craft brewery scene is world-class. Sheffield is, after all, the city that produced Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, and The Human League — and that musical DNA runs through its social life.

Student accommodation in Sheffield

First-year accommodation is guaranteed or strongly supported at both universities — no private searching needed in year one. For private housing from second year, start looking in November. Broomhill — Sheffield's most popular TUoS student area, directly adjacent to the Western Bank campus — fills very fast, with the best houses going by December or January. Form your house group early in the first term, start viewings in November, and sign by January if possible. Crookes fills a little later and is better value. Walkley, Nether Edge, and Endcliffe can be searched slightly later. Hallam students looking at Walkley and the city centre have a little more time.

University halls typically cost £470–£800/month including bills at both TUoS and Hallam. Shared Victorian terraced houses in Broomhill and Endcliffe average £520–£680/month per person excluding bills. Crookes and Walkley are more affordable — typically £450–£600/month. Nether Edge and Sharrow Vale run slightly higher but offer exceptional quality of neighbourhood. Purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) in the city centre runs £600–£920/month with bills usually included. Sheffield has the lowest private rented student house prices of any comparable student city in the UK — the quality-to-cost ratio for TUoS students in particular is exceptional.

Broomhill is the TUoS heartland — directly adjacent to the Western Bank campus, compact, and completely student-dominated. Endcliffe and Ranmoor are quieter, leafier alternatives popular with TUoS postgrads, with Endcliffe Park on the doorstep. Crookes is the most characterful option — brilliant independent pubs, lower rents, a strong community feel, and a hilly walk to campus. Walkley is Crookes' more affordable neighbour and popular with Hallam students. Ecclesall Road is the best choice for students who want to live on the finest independent bar and restaurant strip in the UK student sector. Kelham Island is Sheffield's most exciting new neighbourhood — craft breweries, converted industrial spaces, and PBSA.

Getting around

No — Sheffield is compact and walkable, and most students manage easily without a car. The Sheffield Supertram covers key routes including Hillsborough, the city centre, and southeastern suburbs. Buses serve all student areas comprehensively. Many TUoS students simply walk from Broomhill to campus in under 10 minutes. Crookes is hilly but bus-served. Ecclesall Road has a good bus service to both campuses. Kelham Island and the city centre are walkable to Hallam. Cycling is popular, with a growing network of routes. A car in central Sheffield is expensive to park and largely unnecessary — public transport and walking cover everything students need.

Sheffield is well connected. Leeds is just 30 minutes by TransPennine Express — the fastest inter-city link in the student set. Manchester is under an hour by TransPennine Express. London St Pancras is under 2 hours on the fast East Midlands/Avanti service. Nottingham is 50 minutes. Birmingham is around 1 hour 20 minutes. Edinburgh is around 3 hours. Sheffield's train station is in the city centre, easily accessible from all student areas. With a 16–25 Railcard, all fares drop by a third — making Leeds and Manchester genuinely viable for day trips, work, and social life without pre-planning.

Sheffield has the South Yorkshire Supertram (three lines covering the city centre, Hillsborough, Meadowhall, and southeast Sheffield) plus a comprehensive bus network across all student areas. The Supertram is fast, reliable, and popular for Hallam students connecting campuses. Buses serve Broomhill, Crookes, Walkley, Ecclesall Road, and Nether Edge regularly. The city is compact enough that many students don't regularly use either — walking or cycling covers most daily needs. Sheffield's Malin Bridge and Hillsborough tram stops provide useful connections for students in the northwest. Overall, public transport is solid if not London-grade; the city's walkability compensates well.

Student life

Yes — your NUS/TOTUM card gets discounts across Sheffield's shops, restaurants, and venues. A 16–25 Railcard saves a third on rail — essential for Leeds (30 min), Manchester (under 1 hr), and London (under 2 hrs). The TUoS Students' Union — the UK's best — runs subsidised bars, clubs, gigs, and events that are significantly cheaper than city venues. Hallam's SU is equally active and affordable. The Millennium Gallery and Sheffield Botanical Gardens are completely free. The Peak District — 20 minutes by bus — costs nothing. Rock City, Leadmill, and the Foundry all run regular discounted student nights.

Sheffield has a solid part-time job market — particularly in hospitality, retail, healthcare, and the growing digital and creative sectors. Ecclesall Road, Kelham Island, and the city centre food and bar scenes provide good waiting and bar work. Both universities have active careers services with on-campus roles and job boards. Sheffield Teaching Hospitals is one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK — a major employer for health-related students at both universities. The Hallam Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre creates sport science employment opportunities. Leeds and Manchester are both under an hour for expanded job options, and the 16–25 Railcard makes commuting very viable.

Sheffield is extraordinary for students who want more than nightlife. The Peak District National Park is 20 minutes by bus — some of the UK's finest hiking, cycling, rock climbing, and wild swimming. Within the city, the Millennium Gallery, Kelham Island Museum, and Sheffield Botanical Gardens are all free. The Crucible Theatre is one of the UK's finest stage venues (and home of the World Snooker Championship). Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is a fascinating piece of Sheffield's industrial heritage. The city has 5 rivers and 170 woodlands within its boundaries. Ecclesall Road's independent coffee shop and restaurant scene is among the UK's best. Sheffield is, quite simply, exceptional for outdoor-minded students.

Sheffield is consistently rated the UK's most liveable student city — and the combination it offers is genuinely hard to match anywhere in the UK. A Russell Group global top-100 university with the UK's best Students' Union. One of the UK's most affordable major cities. Ecclesall Road's extraordinary independent bar and café scene. The Peak District 20 minutes away. Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, The Human League. 61% greenspace within the city boundary. Leeds in 30 minutes and Manchester in under an hour. Students who choose Sheffield consistently express very high satisfaction — it is a city that surprises, rewards, and improves the more you explore it.

Studying

Each university has distinct and well-regarded strengths. The University of Sheffield is particularly celebrated for engineering and materials science (globally leading — the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre is world-renowned), medicine and dentistry, computer science, architecture, economics, and law. It has been voted the UK's best Students' Union more times than any other university. Sheffield Hallam is particularly strong for sport science (the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park is globally leading), nursing, social work, film and media, business, and architecture. Both universities have strong links with South Yorkshire's growing digital, healthcare, and manufacturing sectors.

Yes — both are well-regarded in their respective categories. The University of Sheffield is a Russell Group institution ranked in the global top 100 — with excellent research intensity, strong graduate employment outcomes, and a consistent top-15 position in UK rankings. Its engineering and materials science faculties are particularly prestigious internationally. Sheffield Hallam holds TEF Silver and is consistently in the UK's top modern universities — with a strong reputation for graduate employment, particularly in health, sport, and the creative industries. Both universities appear regularly in national top-30 overall rankings, and Sheffield is the most affordable Russell Group city in the UK by a significant margin.

Entry requirements differ significantly. The University of Sheffield is selective — most courses require ABB–AAA at A-Level, with Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Computer Science, and Architecture among the most competitive. Medicine and Dentistry require UKCAT/UCAT in addition to grades, with some of the highest average scores of any UK medical school. Sheffield Hallam is more accessible — most courses require BBC–ABB, with nursing and social work courses partly assessed on interview and personal statement. Hallam actively welcomes applications from students with BTECs and Access to HE qualifications, and contextual offers are available. Both universities run Foundation Year programmes for students who need an additional preparatory year.
