Overview

Is the University of Suffolk right for you?

The University of Suffolk is a small, young university on the Waterfront in Ipswich, Suffolk's county town. The campus is a short walk from the town centre and the station, and the marina area around it is packed with bars and cafés. Most undergraduate courses use 'block and blend' teaching, so you focus on one module at a time.

It's a good fit if you want small classes and a calmer pace, with the coast, countryside, Cambridge and London all within reach. It isn't a big party university, though, and the university doesn't own any halls. You book directly with private providers, including Athena Hall on campus.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want small classes where lecturers know your name
  • You like the idea of studying one module at a time ('block and blend')
  • You want a waterfront campus in a manageable town rather than a big city
  • You're interested in health, nursing or other placement-heavy courses with strong local links
  • You want the Suffolk coast and countryside nearby, with London and Cambridge a train ride away

Think twice if…

  • You want a big student city with a huge nightlife scene
  • You're relying on a guaranteed first-year hall place. The university doesn't own or allocate rooms, and you book directly with landlords
  • You want a wide choice of halls. There are only a few accredited buildings, led by Athena Hall's 590 beds
  • You want hundreds of clubs and societies to pick from. It's a small university, so the choice is narrower
