Overview

Is Imperial College London right for you?

Imperial is a science, engineering, medicine and business university right in the middle of South Kensington, with Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall and the big museums on its doorstep. Courses are demanding and the workload is famously heavy, but you're surrounded by people who love their subject as much as you do.

The catch is cost. London rents are steep, and even Imperial's own halls run from £150 to £425 a week, with the cheapest rooms being shared twins. Many first years live in North Acton, about 40 minutes by Tube from campus. If you want a top STEM degree and can handle the price tag, it's a remarkable place to study.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want to study science, engineering, medicine or business and nothing else distracts you
  • You thrive on a heavy, challenging workload alongside very motivated classmates
  • You like the idea of living and studying in central London, next to Hyde Park and the museums
  • You want a huge choice of clubs and societies (380+ through the Union)
  • You'd like a very international student community

Think twice if…

  • You want to study humanities or social sciences: Imperial doesn't really offer them as degrees
  • Money is tight: halls cost £150–£425 a week and the university estimates living costs of about £16,400–£17,000 for nine months
  • You want to walk to lectures from halls. North Acton halls (the biggest) are about 40 minutes by Tube from South Kensington
  • You're not keen on sharing a room: the cheapest hall rooms are twin rooms
  • You'd prefer a relaxed pace with lots of free time
