Overview

Is University College London right for you?

UCL is a large research university in the middle of London. The main campus is in Bloomsbury, a few minutes' walk from Euston, King's Cross and the West End, and there's a second campus, UCL East, in Stratford. Most undergraduate halls are in or near Bloomsbury, so many first years can walk to lectures.

The catch is cost. Central London is expensive, and UCL halls for 2026/27 average about £320 a week. Around half of UCL's students are postgraduates and half are international, so the vibe is busy, global and independent rather than a classic campus bubble. If you want London on your doorstep, few places compete.

  • You've already lived or studied at a university in Greater London: you won't qualify for the first-year accommodation guarantee
  • Big, busy and anonymous isn't your thing: UCL has more than 51,000 students

Popular student areas for second and third year

Camden and Kentish Town

Popular with students for markets, music venues and nightlife, a short bus or Tube ride north of campus.

King's Cross and Somers Town

Right next to Bloomsbury and very well connected, but you pay for the location.

Stratford

Handy for UCL East and on fast Tube and Overground links into central London, with lots of newer purpose-built blocks.

Zone 2 and 3 areas on direct Tube lines
