Overview

Is the London School of Economics and Political Science right for you?

LSE is a small, specialist university that punches far above its size in the social sciences. Everything happens on a tight cluster of buildings around Houghton Street, between Holborn and the Strand, so you're in the middle of London from day one. Teaching is rigorous, students are ambitious, and the public lecture programme brings politicians, economists and world leaders to campus.

It's also very international and very London: expensive, busy and sometimes intense. Halls are guaranteed for first years who book on time, but most single rooms cost £270–£375 a week. If you want a quiet campus bubble or a wide range of subjects, look elsewhere.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want to study economics, politics, law, international relations or another social science at a specialist university
  • You want to be right in central London, with the West End, the City and Westminster on your doorstep
  • You'd enjoy a very international student body and a big public lecture programme
  • You're self-motivated and happy with a demanding, academic culture
  • You want halls a short walk or bus ride from lectures

Think twice if…

  • Money is tight: London is expensive, and most single rooms in LSE halls cost about £270–£375 a week for 2026/27
  • You want sciences, engineering, medicine or creative arts: LSE only teaches social sciences
  • You want a green campus with fields and space: LSE is a set of city-centre buildings
  • You want a mix of every kind of subject among your friends: with only social sciences, the course mix is much narrower than at a multi-faculty university
  • You'd rather not commute later on: after first year, most students rent privately, and affordable London rooms are usually much further out than halls
