Overview

Is the University of Edinburgh right for you?

Edinburgh is a big, international university woven through one of Europe's most beautiful cities. Most teaching happens around George Square and the Old Town, with sciences and engineering at King's Buildings to the south. Most first years live in university halls, including Pollock Halls right next to Arthur's Seat.

The catch is cost. Edinburgh is one of the UK's priciest cities outside London: the university estimates £13,914 for a 39-week year, and private rents are high. Halls aren't cheap either. If you can make the budget work, it's a brilliant place to spend four years.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a historic, beautiful city where uni buildings are part of the Old Town
  • You'd like a big, international student community (around four in ten students are from outside the UK)
  • You want lots of choice of courses, societies and things to do
  • Festivals, comedy, theatre and the outdoors (Arthur's Seat, the Pentlands) appeal
  • You'd enjoy the flexibility of a four-year Scottish degree

Think twice if…

  • You're on a tight budget: the university estimates £1,546 a month to live in Edinburgh in 2026/27
  • You want cheap private housing from second year: private rent averages around £688 a month for a room, plus bills, and the market is competitive
  • You want a single self-contained campus: buildings are spread across the city, and King's Buildings is a bus ride from the centre
  • You don't like crowds: the city gets very busy in August and with tourists year-round
