Overview

Is the University of St Andrews right for you?

St Andrews is a small, old and very beautiful university in a seaside town on the Fife coast. University buildings are spread through the town, so you walk everywhere, and with around 11,600 students the place is dominated by uni life. Most first years live in catered halls, which act as your social base, and traditions run deep.

The trade-offs are real. The town is tiny, there's no railway station, and nightlife is mostly the Union, house parties and hall events. Accommodation is expensive: even the cheapest standard room costs about £184 a week, and private rooms in town are scarce. If you want a close-knit, traditional experience, it's special.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a small, close-knit community where you keep bumping into people you know
  • You like the idea of catered halls and old university traditions
  • You'd love a beach, coastal walks and golf on your doorstep
  • You want an international mix: nearly half of students are from outside the UK
  • You're happy to make your own fun through societies, sport and hall events

Think twice if…

  • You want big-city nightlife, gigs and clubs: the nearest city, Dundee, is a bus ride away
  • You're on a tight budget: university rooms start at about £184 a week and catered rooms are around £256 a week or more
  • You want to fly under the radar. In a town this small, everyone knows everyone
  • You'll need cheap private housing later on: the town has limited rental stock and high demand
  • You want a quick train home: there's no station in St Andrews, so you'll start every journey with a bus to Leuchars
