Overview

Is the University of East Anglia right for you?

UEA is a proper campus university on the western edge of Norwich. Everything is in one place: teaching buildings, a 24-hour library, the Sportspark, the Sainsbury Centre gallery and over 3,600 rooms in halls. There's even a lake to walk round. First years are guaranteed a room if they apply on time, and nobody needs a bus to get to lectures.

It suits people who like a close community with a city nearby. Norwich is compact, friendly and cheaper than many university cities, but it's not a big-city scene, and it's a long way from most of the country. If you want a self-contained campus life with a small city for the weekends, it's a strong fit.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a real campus where halls, lectures, the library and the SU are all within walking distance
  • You like the idea of a small, friendly city rather than a huge one
  • You're into creative writing, environmental science or climate research
  • You want green space: woodland, a lake and walking trails on your doorstep
  • You'd like a first-year halls guarantee with bills included

Think twice if…

  • You want big-city nightlife every night of the week
  • You want to be able to get home quickly: Norwich is out on the east of England, a fair way from most of the UK
  • You don't like brutalist concrete architecture (the original campus is famously full of it)
  • You're set on a particular room type: the guarantee is for a room, not your first-choice residence, and you could be offered a twin room if single rooms run out
  • You'd rather not live in a 'campus bubble' where most of your social life stays on site

Where our rankings rate it highly

  • 4th of 124 for nightlife
  • 4th of 124 for social life
  • 6th of 124 for student societies
  • 10th of 124 for freshers experience
  • 13th of 124 for student wellbeing

Known for

  • Its pioneering creative writing MA, set up in 1970 by novelists Malcolm Bradbury and Angus Wilson
  • The Climatic Research Unit, founded in 1972, one of the best-known climate science centres in the world
  • The Sainsbury Centre art gallery and Denys Lasdun's stepped 'ziggurat' halls, right on campus
  • A big green campus with its own lake (the UEA Broad) on the Norwich Research Park, next to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital
