Overview

Is Durham University right for you?

Durham is a collegiate university in a small, historic city. Every student belongs to one of 17 colleges, from the Bailey colleges by the cathedral to the newer Hill colleges up towards the science site. Your college is where you live in first year and where much of your social life, sport and formals happen.

The flip side is the price and the size of the place. College rooms are expensive, at roughly £185 to £300 a week for 2026/27, and many are catered whether you like it or not. Durham is also small, so nightlife is limited compared with a big city. If you want tradition and community, it's a great fit.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a ready-made community through a college system
  • You like the idea of formals, college sport and college traditions
  • You want a small, walkable, historic city rather than a sprawling one
  • You're keen on getting involved: over 200 societies, plus college clubs and teams
  • You'd like catered halls in first year so you're not cooking every night

Think twice if…

  • You're on a tight budget: 2026/27 college rooms cost about £185–£308 a week (catered rooms include food), and private rents in the city centre are in high demand
  • You want a big-city nightlife scene; Durham is a small city, and Newcastle is the nearest big night out
  • You want to choose exactly where you live: you're allocated a college, and preferences don't guarantee a particular college or room type
  • College traditions and formals aren't your thing and you'd rather keep uni life low-key
  • You'd rather not walk uphill: the Hill colleges can be 20–30 minutes on foot from the city centre

Popular student areas for second and third year

Viaduct

A popular student area close to the railway station and the city centre, full of terraced shared houses.

Claypath and Gilesgate

Just east of the Market Place, handy for the city centre and the Bailey.

Neville's Cross

A bit further out to the south-west and quieter, with a walk or bus into town.

Top tip

Apply for your course first: the accommodation preference form is emailed to firm and insurance offer holders in early June, so you don't need to apply separately before then. Look at the 2026/27 price list before you fill it in, because catered and self-catered colleges differ by up to about £3,200 a year. If you'd rather pay less, say so in your preferences, but remember preferences aren't guaranteed. For second year, start looking early: the university's housing hub warns that the city centre is in demand and often more expensive.
