Overview

Is the University of Sussex right for you?

Sussex is a campus university at Falmer, just outside Brighton. Its red-brick 1960s buildings sit in parkland on the edge of the South Downs, and most first years live on campus, so lectures, the library and your flat are all a short walk apart. Brighton's seafront, gigs and nightlife are about 10 minutes away by train or bus.

It's a mid-sized university of about 17,000 students, so it feels friendly without being tiny. The catch is cost: campus rooms run from about £123 to £236 a week for 2026/27, and private renting in Brighton is pricey. There's also a big building project on campus until at least 2027.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a self-contained campus with green space and the South Downs on the doorstep
  • You also want a lively seaside city a short train or bus ride away
  • You like the idea of almost every first year living on campus together
  • You'd prefer a mid-sized university where it's easier to find your people
  • You care about walking, outdoors and a more relaxed, creative atmosphere

Think twice if…

  • You're on a tight budget: most en-suite campus rooms cost over £200 a week, and Brighton private rents are high
  • You want to live in the middle of a city: campus is about 4 miles out at Falmer
  • Building work bothers you. The West Slope development is under construction through 2026/27 and beyond
  • You'd rather not rely on buses and trains for nights out in town
  • You want a big Russell Group-style research giant with tens of thousands of students

Student life

What student life is like in Brighton

Campus life centres on the University of Sussex Students' Union, which runs the clubs, societies, sports teams and student venues on campus. Because most first years live on campus, it's easy to drop into events and meet people. Brighton is the big draw beyond that: the seafront, the Lanes, North Laine, live music and clubs are around 10 minutes away by train from Falmer station or on the frequent buses. The South Downs start at the edge of campus for walks and runs, and the Amex Stadium is right next door.

Highlights

  • Students' Union-run clubs, societies and campus venues
  • Most first years live on campus, so there's a strong campus community
  • Brighton's seafront, the Lanes and North Laine about 10 minutes away by train
  • The South Downs National Park right on the edge of campus
  • Falmer station opposite campus, with trains to Brighton and Lewes
  • The Amex Stadium (Brighton & Hove Albion) next door
