Overview

Is the University of Bath right for you?

Bath is a mid-sized university on a hilltop campus at Claverton Down, about a mile and a half above one of the prettiest cities in the UK. Almost everything is on one site: teaching, the library, the SU, most first-year halls and an elite-level sports village. It has a strong careers focus, with placement years built into many courses.

The trade-off is that the campus can feel a bit of a bubble, and getting into town means a bus ride up and down a steep hill. Bath is also an expensive place to live. Hall prices run from £98 to £315 a week, and the university puts average private rent at around £800 a month before bills.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a compact campus where lectures, halls and sport are all a few minutes' walk apart
  • A placement year in industry is a big part of why you're going to uni
  • Sport matters to you, whether that's training seriously or just using top facilities
  • You'd prefer a mid-sized university to a huge one
  • You like the idea of a beautiful, historic small city rather than a big one

Think twice if…

  • You want a big-city nightlife scene. Bath is a small city and quieter than Bristol down the road
  • You're on a very tight budget: the university puts average Bath rent at about £800 a month before bills
  • You'd rather not rely on buses: campus sits at the top of Bathwick Hill, and the city centre is a ride away
  • You'd find living in a campus bubble restrictive in first year
  • You want a choice of cheap city-centre halls. Most first years live on campus, and city-centre rooms are limited
