Overview

Is Lancaster University right for you?

Lancaster is a campus university with a twist: everything is built around colleges. Whether you live on campus or not, you join one of eight undergraduate colleges, and that's where you'll find your bar, your welfare team and much of your social life. The campus sits at Bailrigg, about three miles south of the city, and has its own shops, sports centre and frequent buses into town.

It's a tight-knit, friendly setup, and halls are reasonably priced for a campus uni. The trade-off is that you're a bus ride from the city, and Lancaster itself is small. If you want big-city nightlife on your doorstep, look elsewhere.

You’ll love it if…

  • You like the idea of a college 'family' that gives you a ready-made community from day one
  • You want to live, study and socialise in one place on a self-contained campus
  • You fancy friendly inter-college rivalry and the annual Roses tournament against York
  • You'd like the Lake District and the coast within easy reach
  • You want campus halls with bills, Wi-Fi and contents insurance included in one price

Think twice if…

  • You want to live in a big city: Lancaster is a small city and campus is three miles out
  • You rely on late-night city life on your doorstep, since most nights out mean a bus into town
  • You want a studio in first year: the university advises new students to think carefully as studio blocks have no communal areas
  • You don't want your social life tied to a college identity
  • You'd rather not budget for a bus pass: a Lancaster UniRider annual pass is £555 for 2026/27
