Overview

Is the University of Derby right for you?

Derby is a mid-sized university in a compact, affordable East Midlands city. The main campus is on Kedleston Road, on the north-west edge of Derby, and there are city-centre sites at Markeaton Street, Britannia Mill and One Friar Gate Square. Halls are mostly in or near the city centre, and the university's own Unibus links everything up.

It's a good fit if you want sensible costs and a friendly, manageable size. The trade-off is that Derby isn't a big student city, so the nightlife is modest compared with Nottingham or Leicester nearby. Expect a short bus ride most days, as halls and the main campus aren't side by side.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a manageable-sized university where it's easy to find your feet
  • You're on a budget: standard hall rooms start at about £119 a week, bills included
  • You like practical, career-focused courses at a TEF Gold-rated university
  • You want a quieter city, with Nottingham and Birmingham easy to reach by train
  • You're into theatre or the performing arts (the university owns Derby Theatre)

Think twice if…

  • You want a big, buzzing student city with a huge nightlife scene
  • You want to walk to lectures: the main campus is on Kedleston Road, away from most halls, so you'll probably use the Unibus
  • You don't want to pay for travel: the Unibus isn't free (an annual pass is £310)
  • You want a campus bubble where you live and study in one place
