Overview

Is the University of Kent right for you?

Kent's main campus sits on a hill above Canterbury, with 300 acres of parkland and views over the cathedral city. Most first years live on campus in halls and colleges, so lectures, the Students' Union and your friends are all close by. There's a smaller campus at Medway too.

Accommodation is good value at the cheaper end, with shared houses from about £139 a week for 2026/27, and bills are included. En-suite flats are pricier at £250–£290. Canterbury is a small, historic city with a decent nightlife, and London is about an hour away by train.

You’ll love it if…

  • You want a green campus with a strong community feel
  • You like the idea of a small, historic city rather than a huge one
  • You want a range of accommodation prices, including cheaper shared houses
  • You'd like easy access to London and Europe
  • You want plenty of societies (250+) without the scale of a giant university

Think twice if…

  • You want a big-city nightlife scene: Canterbury is small, and London is an hour away
  • You want all-inclusive catering: Kent's 'catered' rooms include a £15 daily meal allowance in term, not a full board plan
  • You want a cheap en-suite: most en-suite rooms are £250–£290 a week for 2026/27
  • Your course is at Medway but you want campus life in Canterbury: Medway students are guaranteed rooms at Pier Quays, not Canterbury
