Overview

Is the University of Plymouth right for you?

Plymouth is a city-centre university by the sea. The campus sits at Drake Circus, a few minutes from the shops, and halls are either on campus or in the nearby Student Village. That means most first years can walk everywhere. Its marine science is a big draw, with a Marine Station on the waterfront and diving built into some courses.

Plymouth itself is a working naval city with a lovely seafront, and it's one of the more affordable places to study. It's a long way from most of the UK, and the nightlife is smaller than in bigger cities. If you love the coast and want an easy, walkable student life, it's a great fit.

You’ll love it if…

  • You love the sea, sailing, diving or surfing, or want to study marine science
  • You'd like to walk from your halls to lectures and the city centre
  • You're after a mid-sized, friendly university rather than a giant one

Think twice if…

  • You want big-city nightlife and lots of big-name gig venues
  • You'll want to get home often: Plymouth is far from most of the UK
  • You want cheap en-suites: most en-suite halls cost £209.50 a week or more in 2026/27
  • You'll need a guaranteed room but might apply late: the guarantee deadline is in early July
