1. Shepherd’s
Address: Piccadilly Arcade, New St, B2 4HD
Shepherd’s have based their business around both the old and the new in barbershop practice. With many years experience between their barbers, Shepherd’s believes in sleek, modern styles with a central location and fantastic interior, combined with classic techniques and a full range of services for whatever you need. Whilst it is not the most affordable on our list, their services are hard to rival in terms of range, from a simple dry cut, a colour, a complete restyle, all the way up to a full service, with hair and beard shaping, a facial, a wet shave and a shoe shining service (this service takes up to two hours, so make sure you’ve got a clear calendar for the day!) So, whilst it might not be a regular barber on a student budget, it is definitely worth a visit.2. Barberology
Address: 1 Warstone Lane, Jewellery Quarter, B18 6JE
Trendy and friendly, Barberology won the 2016 award for Barber of the Year. Their staff are highly trained and professional, with years of expertise between them and the location is beautiful, set in the historic Jewellery Quarter and surrounded by museums, cafes and bars. It’s not exactly traditional to get a haircut as part of a day out, but Jewellery Quarter is not exactly traditional either. So, try out Barberology for the incredible barbers they are or as part of a fun day of exploring the JQ.3. Jake’s Barbers
Address: 50-54 St Paul’s Square, Birmingham, B3 1QS
Jake’s Barbers is classic and spacious inside, with exposed brick, framed art and space to wait in comfort. Also in the Jewellery Quarter, this barber shop is run by extremely skilled barbers, trained in a programme designed by Vidal Sassoon. Their consultancy service is there for if you want to switch up your style radically, or they offer a trimming service from £18 (including a wash and finish) or beard trimming from 3. It is a lovely place to go for a professionally-done hairstyle in a great atmosphere.4. Everyman Barbers
Address: 19 Temple St, Birmingham, B2 5BG
According to their website, Everyman Barbers provides ‘a space to men where they can get all of their grooming needs resolved under one roof’, and I certainly have to agree. They have classic fixtures, a great range of services and professional barbers. Temple St is right in the centre of town, so Everyman is easily accessible to students across Birmingham. They have long opening hours (open until 7pm on weekdays) so they are great for even the busiest of students. They even have a live camera on the shop floor so that walk-ins can see how busy it is in real time. Their services are hugely varied, including wet and dry cuts, colouring, beard maintenance and SMP (Scalp Micropigmentation) if you are struggling with hair loss. With affordable prices and a great range of take-home products, this is a great choice for a regular barber.5. Supercuts
6. The Barber House
7. The Gentlemen Barbers
Address: 2 Hampton Court Rd, Harborne, Birmingham B17 9AE
Birmingham is actually home to two branches of The Gentleman Barbers, the other being in Brindleyplace, but I wanted to talk about this one because it is a bit further out of town and very close to University of Birmingham Prichatt’s Park accommodation. Being further out of town doesn’t mean access to a fantastic haircut is lost – you only need to look at the success of this barber shop. Their services include hair trimming, dyeing and fading, as well as facials and beard styling, with reasonable pricing and excellent service. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a brilliant barber in the south of Birmingham.8. Kings Barber Club
Address: Burlington Court, 18 Lower Temple St, B2 4JD
According to their website, Kings Barber Club ‘is the UK’s largest independently owned chain of barbershops’. And it’s not hard to see the key to their success – across their fourteen Birmingham-based shops, their range of services and expertise in the trade is hard to fault. They specialise in all different types of hair, as well as offering beard and hair care services. Celebrity testimonials include Jon Clark (The Only Way is Essex), Calum Best (Celebrity Big Brother) and Dan Edgar (also of TOWIE). So, there you have it. Birmingham is home to plenty of wonderful barbers, and you’ll certainly never be short of great places to get your hair done. But, if none of these sound like they’re for you, lots of universities have their own barbers or unisex hairdressers. If yours doesn’t, almost every student area has a barbers with affordable pricing and great service.Frequently asked questions
